Abraham - Father of Faith 4

Genesis 20

Last week we finished with Abraham and I think that's pretty good considering that there is so much to talk about him with.  We saw that Lot went after the things that were pleasing to the eye and he chased after his blessings.  They were physical things to him.  However, Abraham went after God's heart and trusted in him.  He believed that God Himself was his blessing as God told him earlier.

A question that is asked a lot is if God saves those who never hear the Word of God.  I think that chapter 20 is an example of something that God does.  He saves Abimelech from certain death because Abraham once again lies about his wife being his sister.  God comes to Abimelech in a dreams and warns him that Sarah is actually married and is not to be touched.  However, the most important part here is that Abraham is proven to be a lier once God appears to Abimelech, but God still claims him.  God tells Abimelech that Abraham is his prohet even though Abraham clearly made a mistake here.

I think this is the same way that God looks at each one of us as well.  Even though we make mistakes in our lives God patiently waits for us and helps us when we make those mistakes.  This is the second time that Abraham has tried to pass his wife off as his sister and the second time he was caught as well.  Both times God intervened and saved both Abraham and Sarah.

We also looked at the story of Isaac's birth, Abraham's and Sarah's son, and also when Abraham was asked by God to sacrifice Isaac.  These things happened because that is what God promised them.  Abraham and Sarah already tried to have a child, but without God, and it did not turn out the way they intended.  God tests Abraham and this time he does the right thing and God provides a sacrifice for Abraham.  In the same way He provided for Abrahan the whole time after he left his land.  Even though he himself tried to solve many of the problems himself we see that God was in the picture the whole time.

Many times we try to solve our own problems by thinking of things to do ourselves.  For me I have been giving to the church with my money because I felt that it was what God wanted me to do.  However, it was not very satisfying for me because God has been speaking to me to do more then just give my money.  Money is easy for me to give, not because I make a lot, but because it does not deal with people and writing a check takes like five seconds.  God has been telling me to get involved with people's lives and to spend my time helping others.  This has been what God has been telling me, but I was thinking that writing a check would just be enough.
